Preamble

Very clear and the microphone is outstanding. I did have one fail on me recently, but it was still under warranty so no problems there. Easy to install and configure, and the iphone app is solid and easy to use. Superb. Great quality. Easy to set up. Their customer service is astounding. Troubleshooting guys could use some work, but everyone else is pretty good. . My only minor complaint is it's kinda bulky, but if that's the cost of a nice picture and audio. (zips mouth shut, locks, and throws away key). Cause quality is 100000000x more important to me than size for my applications. -U. Nancy

Overall, this is a very well made and study ip camera, it holds up well against the elements. I have the camera outside with it exposed to, outside temps below 20 degrees f, it still works after having my home power surge a few times, and holds up great against water. The phone app works great on my phone and i can connect to all my cameras in just a few sec. The most recent software update for the pc was night and day performance increase related to software stability and resource allocation. Before the software update, the pc application was too cpu intensive when it shouldn't have. I hope my review helps.

Click to see NoticeReolink Rlc 420 2560x1440p Outdoor Detection (rlc420)"Quick read:. - high resolution video with very good day/night quality. - flexible and easily configurable motion detection. - file upload and email notifications. - heavy duty metal enclosure. - very responsive, deeply technical support. - excellent price. . A very good product can become an excellent product when the manufacturer steps up with support. I had issues with the product when originally purchased. The mac application did not support all features, motion detection being the most notable. There was also a more serious issue with ftp upload to a netgear nas. Finally the gmail smtp agent does not support reolink clients (among others) for sending emails without relaxing security. I contacted reolink via email on a weekend morning and received a response from their technical team by that afternoon. They were responsive and helpful. Ultimately all issues were resolved. Newer releases of the mac app are functionally equivalent to the windows app. The ftp issue resulted from clock drift on the nas because ntpd. Conf pointed to a server no longer in operation. While a significant time difference between server and camera still causes the original behavior it is unreasonable to suggest that misaligned time is a proper condition. The email issue "is what it is" and the work around was to establish a gmail account exclusively for security cameras and relax the security on that account. . I bought these cameras (a 410 bullet and a 420 dome) to evaluate for simple home security/surveillance so features like two-way audio were not a concern but field of view, image quality, motion detection, recording and transfer were. Field of view and image quality are covered well in other reviews and i found both adequate, superior to other cameras, some significantly more expensive. Motion detection has fine grained area selection, four time-of-day sensitivity settings and day-of-week+time-of-day active/inactive settings. Motion detection actions include email and push notifications. Ftp upload is based on a day-of-week-time-of-day schedule and/or motion detection allowing for constant or triggered recording. Field of view is adequate for full room coverage from side or corner without noticeable distortion. Range, day or night, provides adequate coverage for approaches to the house and movement in key areas like garage and front porch. All installations have been outdoors but sheltered under eaves or ceilings limiting exposure to rain and harsh conditions. Temperature range in the southeastern united states is well within the spec'ed operating conditions and has not presented a problem. . I can offer some cautions. Ir illumination uses near-infrared leds with the characteristic red glow making the camera stand out at night. Some contend this reduces security effectiveness and it certainly makes a better target for the paintball gun. These cameras do not support two-way audio but encoding delays make this impractical for intercom applications. The connectors require a larger hole than you may like. Exposed fasteners make it easier for the wrong people to detach or disable the camera. While it is possible to retrieve snapshots the only streaming protocol supported is rtsp which is not supported on some common devices like roku and chromecast. The android reolink app has its ups and downs sometimes closing erratically and spontaneously. . I've not found a better camera at any price that is as well suited to my needs."

The F.A.Q. for reolink rlc-420 4mp hd 2560x1440p ip camera outdoor night vision motion detection email alert

This is a great weatherproof camera. Excellent video quality, excellent audio. The wide angle lens provides an excellent field of view. I have 3 of these hooked up to a reolink nvr, and i plan to get more. Live streaming and playback works very well on my pc, mac, and iphone, once the encoding properties are set correctly. I am extremely satisfied with this camera and would not hesitate to recommend it.

A number of questions have been asked here.

Update: upgrading review to four stars from two - reolink responded very quickly to my problems, and after a firmware upgrade, i'm now able to access the camera from a browser on my mac, as well as the main stream via rtsp url h264preview 01 main (this latter rtsp problem with h264preview 01 main was intermittent, i will update the review again if it starts failing again). . The image quality of this camera is stunning - amazingly crisp and clear - better than the high-quality f19900 foscam, better than the hikvision. . Build quality also looks good. Mount is interesting, but i prefer bullet cameras. . Despite these solutions, great response from reolink, and the fantastic image quality, i have to stop short of the fifth star because these solutions still require installation of a browser plugin, even for the simplest change, such as ip address, osd, whatever (no reason this couldn't be done with a basic web page instead of a plugin). Also, these problems will still exist out-of-the-box for anyone else just purchasing the camera. . I've never so quickly upgraded a review so much, but i've also never received such immediate response to posted problems. . - original review:. . Specs are good (especially the resolution) and the build quality look good, but this is another software fail. . The url-link to the main rtsp stream is broken, only the poor resolution rtsp substream works (iow, the url rtsp://ipaddress:554//h264preview 01 main doesn't work, only rtsp://ipaddress:554//h264preview 01 sub). . Also, the camera can not be configured on a mac (redirects from the ip address to "macclient. Html not found"). Tried windows laptop, but special browser extension is required, failed to install (permissions). . If you want to use this camera for anything else than the narrow use case they've defined (perhaps just mobile), might work, but there's better options. . - end of old review (now much better above)

Best reolink rlc 420 2560x1440p outdoor detection (rlc420) in review

I initially had difficulty obtaining the camera's ip address because the default password was set to 12345 instead of "blank". After being able to access the camera i had the camera up and running within a few minutes. Using blue iris software, the video would have random periods of "distortion" that i couldn't get to go away no matter what settings i changed in the camera's configuration properties. I'll have to say that reo-link's customer service really shines! i sent an email about the default password issue and within a few hours i had a response that rectified the problem. Then i sent another email about the distortion and within a short amount of time i had a response. The fix for the "distortion" was to upgrade the camera's firmware. Since then i've had no problems with the video distorting and the video is much better than i anticipated for the price point and is close to the image quality of the hikvision ds-2cd2032-i . I will be supplementing my video surveillance system with more of these cameras in the future and i highly recommend them for anyone wishing to establish a video security system while on a budget.

It's been a very nice experience using this camera. I got it installed a month ago and is been working without an issue. Night vision works great and the video image resolution i think is good. Very simple to configure.

S. Susana, Luton

Not the easiest to get into position. Works great with the free ios app. Lets me keep an eye on the pets and house while i'm at work.

C. Josephine, Hawaii says

One of the best pictures and videos for the ip security camera. The build is solid and looks like will last a long time. I have it installed about a month now outside wall, 2 feet below eave line. It is being stable and provides fast remote streaming viewing ( i have 50mb upload speed) day and night. The build-in cpu load hovers around 40%-50% in full 1080p. It's quality is on par with hikvision and dahua but priced 30% lower. . The shortcomings:. The remote client view software is pretty bare-bone and missing some admin functions. I like to adjust the motion detection or recording scheduler remotely. In windy day, a lot false alarm send to me. I want to be able to tone down the sensitivity or change motion triggering zone when traveling out of the house. . Secondly, the play back is missing functions of exporting h265 video file to avi or mpeg for other media players. I have to search all over the internet to find a converter and many of them are not working correctly. The search is still on. Hopefully some of the viewers can chime in and suggest a good converter. . The network connector is a little too big, i have to drill a hole 1. 5 inch in diameter in the wall. . Bottom line is this is a very good camera and the manufacture updates the software quickly. I also own a rlc-410 (sometimes it feel like the image is slightly better than rlc-420), for a period of 5 months the firmware have been updated twice. . Reo-link, if you are reading reviews. Listen to the users, keep up the good work, step up on the software side quickly as the competitors are coming up quickly too. I just saw another 4mp ip camera between$70-$80 listed on online store. Ebay has more, but i won't buy from ebay overseas sellers, got burned few times and their listings have almost zero product reviews.

D. Elida, Georgia

After a lot of shopping around to upgrade my zmodo system, i decided to go with reolink. I purchased their system with 8 camera box and 4 bullet cameras. I added this camera to the front of the house, because i prefer the look of it - more low key, if you will. I'm extremely pleased with the picture of the camera and the build. I just ordered a second one of these to go on the side of the house where i have another similar low res camera. I also plan to get the same one with the 4x optical zoom for use out front to zoom in tight on anyone approaching the front door. I'm also going to eventually get the ptz camera for the backyard. . The same day i had it installed, some kids in a truck egged a friend's car parked in front of my house. Being at night, i was able to see the person flinging the egg; however, since it was completely dark, i could not discern the colors of the truck. This is true of all night vision; you just can't see colors. Also, it seems the exposure is longer; therefore, the stills are fairly "streaky". I could see it was a two-toned double cab pickup truck; however, i couldn't tell for sure what make or model and it would be impossible to read the license plate. I believe this would be the case for any consumer camera in that location at night with a fairly wide view. I can make out the license plate of my car in the day sitting in my driveway. . In the end, i just don't believe this camera can be beat for this price. Just make sure you understand the limitations of these types of cameras. These aren't being used on predator drones. . I've added a screen shot from my phone that i emailed myself at a lower resolution. The actual picture being watched on the system is much more impressive; however, i think this will give most people who have looked at such cameras a good idea. Yes, colors aren't that important, but you can see how good the colors are on this camera.

K. Smith, Nebraska says

The image quality is good, the viewing angle is about 80 degrees. The location i planned is too far back from the gate. While it supports email and ftp and it has an app, each aspect leaves something to be desired. Be sure you update to latest firmware to avoid unnecessary bugs. . The email stopped working for a day and started working again for no apparent reason. The alerts were still working during that period and the app was still popping notifications, but no emails. The test email function still worked. I had to disable 2-factor verification for the emails to work in the first place (i used yahoo but this will go for gmail as well). If yo-u select movie, the image quality will be awful and it'll take a few minutes to arrive, despite being a tiny file. The image is good, and captures the instant the motion was detected, but you can't send multiple images, you can only choose from alert intervals, starting at 30 sec. It takes about 12 seconds from alert to email notification for me. Unreliability and inability to send multiple pictures means this alone doesn't serve my purpose of keeping a log of visitors and getting instant picture alerts. . Ftp seems to be the most reliable aspect, once you learn that the ftp test feature in the software doesn't necessarily work. It lets you send alert footage to an ftp server - as in port 21, good 'ol unsecured ftp where your username and password is sent over the network in plain text. Careful with that. It sends a . Jpg and the . 264 file in whatever size you specify. The . Jpg images are for the very first frame - kind of a thumbnail. I haven't tried to find another viewer for the movies yet, vlc didn't seem to work. The included software does work for viewing the images, but it doesn't retain play speed settings when playing through the whole list, and it shows a blank screen between videos, and it plays the whole file, which is minimum 10mb according to the settings, so it shows a good 10 seconds after detection. Not really a pro or a con, but something to be aware of if your setup will have a lot of false positives - hard to cycle through them quickly. I tried setting up the full-time stream to see what size files it would make, think it came out to 4gb/hour at full res/30fps. . The app is pretty good, but it has no function for storing logs. We have the camera near the front of the house, so by the time i get the alert and go to the view, it's the live view and chances are there's nothing to see. One surprising aspect is that i added the camera using the ip on the app when on wifi with my phone. Then we went out to breakfast and i got an alert. Yes way outside wifi range and it showed the live view with current timestamp. So somehow the feed goes out over the wan before reaching the app, which is good for simplicity's sake but confusing from a privacy aspect. Where else is the image going? is it encrypted? why do they eat up bandwidth when people expect it to be going over wifi? i am unlimited, but still it was surprising and makes for lots of extra bottlenecks. I like that you can zoom on the app, and that it's easy to use, but on its own it doesn't cut it. If you have this as a doorbell type setup, it might be adequate since you get the live view. . Motion detection is good for what it is - but bear in mind that shadows crossing the surface you're monitoring will be enough to set it off with any reasonable sensitivity. Also, reflections. We haven't had it fail to alert yet - but depending on the time of day we'll get a ton of false positives for a brief period. The software allows us to filter alerts by time, and adjust sensitivity for different times of day, the trouble is that with the seasons the exact periods will vary by several hours, and making windows for all that will leave us partially or completely blind half the day. . The pc software isn't very polished or organized but it appears to have a lot of functionality. Don't assume you know what something is for at first glance. For instance the button that looks like "shuffle" in playback mode actually lets you watch through the entire list of movies you've added to the playlist, you'd never know without clicking. Also, ftp and email are in "advanced settings" on the device settings, right next to ddns and ntp, which can be really confusing if you're not familiar with those protocols and what they're for. Enabling the email section is in another area of the menu, in other words things are scattered and buried. There's not much help built in. Any filter you apply to the feed appears to be for the software only - the feed from the camera isn't affected. You can record from the software itself, and put it in avi format, so if you plan on having a pc on 24/7 this will probably fill your need. You can specify the folder size and whether you want alerts only or full time. If you're out of the house the pc software probably won't do much for you except save things for later. . Unless i'm missing something you'd have to terminate your own ethernet cable to use the included weather-resistant sleeve. Where i plan on installing if i keep it will be in a place where i'll need to run conduit and leave a box like 18 inches from the camera to house the connectors. Oh and don't plan on putting this behind a window. It'll see find during day (plus capture reflections from the room), but once the night mode kicks on the reflection from the ir will blind the cam. I don't see a way to disable the ir and maybe use an ir light outside. I will see if there's a way i could combine the features that work well to get the alerts and records i want. I ask a lot of my technology, and this has been a little disappointing so far. I feel like i got what i paid for, mostly. . Update 7/1: just hit it with a vulnerability scanner - has multiple vulnerabilities and i'm on the latest firmware. The only redeeming aspect is that upnp only appears to register port tcp/9000 for external access, which doesn't expose the ssl vulnerabilities with tcp/443. In other words, someone would have to be on your network already to compromise the camera unless you manually configure port forwarding for 443 or set the camera as your dmz address. My opinion on the camera hasn't changed much - it's gives a good picture and has most features you could want, but lacks reliability and versatility. I get between 80 and 90% of the email alerts that i should. I've been sending them through yahoo! mail though so i can't be certain it's the camera's fault! . . Update 7/31: email alerting seems pretty reliable now. I'm upgrading to four stars - will never get to five because software and cabling could use a lot more polish. I do want to mount it outside so i get better nighttime vision and have it closer to fence and paint part of the gate matte black for better motion detection and shadow rejection. It still hits on shadows/glare twice a day about 20-30 times. A car's windsheild causes about a 3x3' white spot around 16:00. I could assign a blackout period in the software but i'd prefer not to miss any arrivals.

Picture quality and camera features and low cost are a big priority for me. I did a lot of research before committing to a security system, this is my first setup, but have seen and worked with many. So as you can tell i decided to go with reolink after all the research, i ordered their 16ch poe 4mp nvr & rlc-423 ptz camera from them directly in beijing. Then i ordered a few rlc-422 camera's from online store! along with a rlc-420 camera. . -camera only review-. Pro's of rlc-420. Great picture quality! up to 4k resolution 30fps. Digital zoom. Microphone if you want that, i did not care personally. Built very nice, does not feel cheap. Uses one phillips head screw to secure the dome top, easy for someone to remove. Motion detection and email with photo works great. You do not need a nvr or dvr, you can use a pc to record, or do it manually form your phone. Comes with a mounting template for easier install. . Con's of rlc-422. No motorized zoom. I do not care for the way this camera mounts. The wires coming out of the back of the ball actually stick out way to high or far, you will have to drill a large hole (i did a 1-1/2" hole, you need about 2-1/4" for almost full movement if you decide to point the camera another direction) so the wires do not hit and the camera can be adjusted, you do need a pretty larger hole for the poe connector anyway. If you do not drill the hole big enough then the base will not mount flush against the mounting surface and you will not be able to adjust where the camera points as well. . Reolink seems to have the camera only features down and they are nice! cameras with their nvr is slightly different, see that review below. . -camera with reolink nvr review-. . Pro's of rlc-420 with reolink nvr. Easy to use and work. Poe is a nice and easy install straight from nvr with single cat5e cable. Camera is connected directly to nvr, so the high data traffic does not effect your office or home network traffic. Nvr has all the same software features as the camera itself and more. Motion detection and email with photo works great. . Con's of rlc-420 with nvr. Saving settings from remote locations using their web client or phone apps do not seem to work well or very slow to update, like motion detection, they need to be set on nvr itself sometimes. Cannot update camera firmware from nvr, you have to disconnect the camera, reset it and update the firmware then set it back up on nvr. . -. Final thoughts:. I would by the rlc-422 instead of the rlc-420 if you are not on a budget and you do not care for audio. . I am working with reolink to try to resolve some of these issues i am having, and customer service is great so far. Only down side is the time difference between beijing and houston and a very slight language issue with them understanding english, they are trying to help though. . Since this is a review for the camera itself, i give it 4 stars due to the mounting issue!

This is a great camera. I have one of these and a bullet (410) from reolink. I'm extremely happy with picture quality. I have used 5 different brands of cameras and these are by far the best i have used. . Camera image quality:. Image quality is excellent. Color balance great (real life colors). The night vision is great too - i can see very clearly in night vision too. . Software:. The software is awesome - and to their credit reolink is updating the software and making it even better. I've used the android app, and it was very easy to use. I love being able to zoom in on a spot on the live video feed. Audio is great and very clear. I have a camera in my babies room and i could clearly hear everything from the room. Mac software is clear and quick, and thanks to a recent update now is closer to par with the windows version. Windows software is more full featured, but they are catching up on the mac version. . Addition:. To add, their support is awesome. I was looking for cameras to replace a 16 camera analog dvr system and reolink is great. I've contacted support a few times and they are quick and helpful. I'll be upgrading all my cameras to reolink now

Pros: great video quality and flexible resolution adjustments. The apple app is ok. Cons: you must use a windows app to control to camera adjustments, (resolution, etc. ). . The mounting is metal, but the locking mechanism is easily disabled and could render the camera useless due to access and physical damage.

I have one of these cameras and have two more coming. The picture quality, both day and night is extremely good. I also have two of the rlc-410 bullets, but find the nighttime video better on this model. However, daylight video is equally good (excellent) on both models. Not sure why this dome seems to do better at night than the rlc-410 bullet model. This camera is mounted on the front of my house, which has more street lighting than the backyard, where the two bullets are located and is a much darker area. Probably having the additional street lighting added to the built-in ir is giving me the better picture on the dome.

I have purchased 8 reolink ip cameras, 7 of them are the rlc-410 cameras and one is the 420. I am very happy with the reolink cameras, both the 410 and the 420. The 420 is a little more work to mount, since you do have to disassemble the camera to mount it. The 420 gives a little wider view angle and works well in tight quarters. I am currently using this to record the front porch and front door. Previously, i had a 410 camera mounted here. The 420 is definitely better in this situation. . The camera comes well packaged and comes with almost everything you need to set this up. Technically, everything in the box will allow you to use the camera, but i don't understand why it does not come with a poe injector. The ethernet cable is 3 feet long and the power cord is not much longer. Unless you have a power outlet close by and an ethernet port close by, you are going to need an extension cord and most likely a longer ethernet cord. I am using this to monitor our neighborhood's pool and the pool house. . Because i have 8 of these cameras, i went with an 8 port poe capable, gigabit switch from trendnet for both power and data. I am not using an nvr, but a computer assembled solely for the purpose of recording video. The included client software works pretty well. The only downside to it is that you cannot view previously recorded video and continue to record. So i have to either stop recording to review footage, or copy the . 264 files onto an external drive and view them on another computer. That sort of defeats the purpose of having ip cameras. . I contacted customer support about this issue. They explained that the demand on the cpu was too great when recording and reviewing previously recorded footage. I understand that, but i am running a computer with a 6 core processor. It only runs at about 30% utilization with all 8 cameras recording. I would expect the remaining 70% would be sufficient. I would like the option to record and review at the same time and i can decide whether it is too much stress for my cpu. . Speaking of customer service, i have contacted them on several occasions and they have been more than helpful. Their response time is acceptable. It is clear that the person responding to my email fully understands their product and offers useful advice. Every time i have contacted customer service, my issue has been resolved with 1 email. They also have sent me emails informing me when they roll out new camera firmware. . I would highly recommend reolink's products. Although i have only owned the rlc-410 and rlc-420 cameras, i would not hesitate to purchase any of their products based on the experience i have had with their products so far.

I'm no security-expert, just wanted a video/security system for a long time ( 20 years). I don't have crime in my neighborhood and live next to tons of retired people with nothing better to do than call people out, just thought owning one would be a fun hobby. . I finally pulled the trigger and bought the bullet style (rcl-410) to play with. The camera arrived quickly, well packaged, had tons of accessories (power, network, manual, templates, screws, etc. ) and seemed like a quality product. I originally picked reolink because of the high mp and super-low price, i wasn't expecting any of the extras. . After the camera arrived i was surprised by the quality of construction (heavy and well put together) and great built-in software. I plugged the camera into a switch, plugged in power and the camera immediately showed on my network the software seemed very flexible and had tons of features (alerts, sensitivity, save videos to ftp sites, etc. ). After playing with the camera for a week i setup the motion detection/sensitivity, email notifications, and auto-sent video to a local server (via ftp). Everything seemed to work great. . After further googling and youtubing security cameras, i ended up buying five (5) rcl-420 dome cameras because i like the low-profile style. I don't want to announce to everyone i have them. . While the additional 420's were being shipped i bought a cheap poe 8-port gigabit switch (on ebay for $60 - cheap), cat5e cable, rj45 plugs, wall plates, wall connectors, etc. . After the additional cameras arrived i simply plugged them into the new poe switch, immediately started right up and were visible on my network (yay). The next weekend i pulled the cables, cut 1" holes near the roof in 5 spots, and mounted all cameras (pulling cables through insulation is not fun). . The cameras have been running for a few weeks and so far are exceptional. Compared with my brother-in-laws analogue-style cameras, the reolinks image quality blow them away. I soon found out motion detection is a very-difficult thing to "figure out". Blowing trees, headlights, bugs that like the night ir trip the alarm causing multiple alerts. With sensitivity dialed down to a point i"m worried it won't detect people, i started researching dedicated security software applications (sighthound seems like a good option). . Back to the reolink 410/420. The cameras are amazing and would recommend them to anyone. I'm super excited to finally have a video system.

R. Hadley, Reading

Works really well and the interface is simple to use as is their app on android. It does tend to get a little hot to the touch. I use mine to only record when movement occurs and uses ftp over ssh to transfer files to my synology nas box. I use poe using my cisco sg300-10pp-k9 10-port gigabit poe+.
