DeLorme inReach SE Satellite Tracker

I bought this because my spot messenger only sent 2/10 ok messages back to my wife on a recent hike. Normally it is the 70-80% range, but this time it missed 7 consecutive messages. I explained when i first bought the spot that it would not be perfect, but panic sets in anyway. I was checking out the new spot gen3 and saw the inreach, and found a detailed product review comparing the two. The review showed better ratings for the inreach, but not too many details. I really liked the two-way communication with the inreach so i bought one. I received the inreach on thursday night, and got it all set up. I tested it on a run friday and it worked as expected. I took it on a hike saturday and turned on the tracking, and send messages on both the spot and the inreach about every hour. The spot was 7/9, and the inreach was 9/9. In addition all the tracking points (44) were sent from the inreach. I have tried the tracking on the spot before and it was terrible, less than 20%, and the points are off by large distances (miles). The terrain for this was a mix of tree cover, up and down steep valley sides mostly above tree line, and ridgelines above tree line. This hike was in colorado starting at the roaring fork th at arapaho bay on lake granby, and then the trail to stone lake, to the pass between copper and martin peaks, and then the peaks. My only complaint is that the user guide could use a few more pictures and details, but everything went so smoothly on the setup that it was not a problem. I saw a lot of reviews complaining about an annual service plan for the first year, and an activation fee. There was no activation fee, and i could sign up for the monthly plan on the website without any problems.

The inreach se operates over the iridium satellite network, providing truly global two-way satellite communications and high network reliability anywhere on earth, with no gaps, fringe or weak signal areas. With the ability to maintain satellite signal lock even in difficult gps environments, the inreach se also offers global sos capabilities, adjustable tracking intervals from 10 minutes to 4 hours, and remote real-time follow-me/find-me tracking and ping-me locating. In the event of an emergency, the interactive sos capability of inreach automatically triggers remote tracking and allows users to describe and update their situation so proper resources can be deployed. With 90% of the world s surface lacking mobile phone coverage, inreach se is essential gear for the traveller or outdoor adventurer to keep them connected and safe anywhere in the world. The inreach range of devices are the only affordable satellite communication devices that can both send and receive text messages.

Delorme Ag-009871-201 Inreach Se (Gps Or Navigation System) FAQ.

I got this to use while hiking in the forest, since i hike alone. I wanted to be able to talk to the outside world in situations that are not dire enough for using a plb. I tried a satellite phone in the forest, but they just don't work there. Even though this device uses the same satellites as iridium phones, it only needs to get a short blip of information through. So it does actually work in the dense forest most of the time. I recommend getting a good satellite tracking app (i have gosatwatch), so you can view where the iridium satellites are (and hide the dead ones). Generally, you'll get a train of satellites flying directly overhead every 2 hours. In the in-between times, it's possible the signal may be blocked by hills or dense forest. At the worst times, the satellites will be near the horizon to the east and west. The "blackout" periods are usually about 40 minutes (every 2 hours) where i go hiking in dense forest, down in canyon areas. If you have a good view of the whole sky, you will almost always have a good signal. Originally i just wanted to be able to send text messages. But the live tracking feature is a big bonus. If i track every hike, and "something bad happens, " my friends who are watching will be able to call for help even if i never sent any distress message. But i'm also careful to make sure they know about possible blackout periods so there are no false alarms, and that if i do the sos it will probably be for a fellow hiker. So overall the device works great for my purposes. I removed the belt clip per the "edge of table" method, and got the gizzmovest case. Since it transmits high power radio waves, i would not want it clipped to my waist or right up against my body. I keep it in my backpack. I also found it's nice to use the tracking feature while on a road trip. The people at your destination can see exactly where you are and know when you'll be arriving without having to keep calling and asking. Or, it's just fun to have an instant map of where you've been. The only big minus for me is there is no static email address or phone number that you can give out to people so they can reach you. Instead, they have to reply to a message you sent them, or use a link on your map or on facebook. But in a way that's good, because messages can be expensive if you go over your limit (50 cents each). -Notice from V. Isabel, New York

What can i say - my life was saved by my explorer. I was paragliding in one of the most remote areas of idaho, the lost river range (location of idaho's tallest mountain, mt. Borah) when i ascended to an altitude of 11, 000ft with winds exceeding 35 mph, and despite my best efforts - including max speedbar, i had gotten blown over the top of king mountain - worst paragliding fear now realized. . Once on the leeward side, i experienced several rotor induced (full) collapses of my wing but somehow recovered from each and eventually landed out far, far away from the landing zone due to the strength of the prevailing wind - no one knew where i ended up. . The sun was setting when i finally touched down in no-mans land and no one knew where i had ended up as i was on the wrong side of a very tall mountain range. After an hour and a half of battling the conditions, i finally was on landing approach - flying backwards at this point due to the wind velocity but in spite of this i was not hurt on my landing. I ended up in the middle of a secluded tall sagebrush forest- unhurt and therefore did not want to send a generic evac sos for obvious reasons (to include a $10k expense for search and rescue helicopter) so i was glad i had a device that could communicate with the outside world in real time - my ability to do a two-way chat with my contacts not only automatically gave them specifics as to my exact location via a delorme map hyper link, but provided me great peace of mind as i didn't ever feel completely alone or hopeless as i was able to converse, albeit texting. . Unlike spot, with my delorme explorer, i was able to contact several people in my contact list and explain my situation and they were able to reply back accordingly and with updates as to my 'rescue' all via satellite as cell phone contact was non-existent. Having said that, my iphone was invaluable due to the delorme earthmate app i downloaded - no cell reception required, as the explorer and smart phone communicate via bluetooth. The smartphone earthmate app gets all it's pertinent info via the explorer bluetooth connection such as detailed maps and longitude/latitude and much more. This enabled me to see a map of exactly where i was at looking at my smart phone's bigger and color screen. . Just as important, the earthmate app (free download with delorme subscription, btw) enabled me to easily and quickly send lengthy text messages through the linked app which cannot be overstated. Though the explorer has the ability to create texts stand-alone, it takes quite a while if sending lengthy messages (scroll over - click, scroll down - click, scroll up - click, etc. Etc), so the messages are created on the smart phone, like a normal text, then sent to the explorer via bluetooth and then up to the satellites, pretty slick and very quick! my contacts got my messages within 20 seconds on average - about the same on the return message from them. Along with each text message, my contacts received a map link so they knew exactly where to find me. I was so lost that i had to build a fire knowing it would take someone a few hours or even all night to find me, but they finally did thanks to my explorer sending them real time map info - took a few hours they drove straight to my coordinates. . Bottom line, if i hadn't had my explorer with me (nearly left it in my truck), i can just about guarantee i may not have ever been found - at least not until it was too late as i had no water, unforgiving rocky terrain, no direct roads out and a healthy population of wolves and mountain lions in the area. Thanks delorme - i will always include you in my adventures from this point forward - cause you just never know when might be painted into an unforgiving corner.

- X. GinaThis little sat messenger is outstanding. . We were going sailing and i couldn't make up my mind on which phone to buy for the longest time. It came down to $1200 on a full iridium phone with voice, or this little guy. Couldn't be happier with my choice. This is small enough and light enough that i plan to take it on backpacking trips. If you just want emergency response and texting capability, get this; it's the iridium constellation for like $250, and its not junk. . Texting on the sat phone itself is tedious (but definitely doable); pairing it to a smart phone and using the app is the way to go (if able). You forget your using the sat phone, because it feels like you're just texting. The facebook post feature was cool. The built in gps is better than i thought. It gives you course, speed, etc; it updates every second or so. If you take a smart phone with you, download the maps for where you're going; then you can view your position and course on the app. Battery life is very good; we would keep it powered off and check in once or twice a day. At that rate, you can get like two weeks out of a charge. . Yeah, it performed flawlessly. And get the flotation case. . Only issue was being billed an extra month, because i cancelled an hour before the deadline (but still before); the delorme billing folks are amateurs. I took the issue to garmin itself and it was resolved. I'm very glad it did get resolved, because its such good hardware and i didn't want to hate it.

This is my initial review after setting up and walking a few miles around the block. I'll do an update once i get a chance to do a real hike. It covers hardware version 2. 2 and firmware version 2. 7. . . So far i've been able to create an account on the explore. Delorme. Com website and activate my explorer. If you've done your research then you know this is an expensive paperweight without a service plan. If you accurately follow the activation directions then things should go without a hitch. I jumped ahead a little and it wouldn't activate. That was solved by power cycling the explorer and everything worked just like they describe in the manual. . I was able to send/receive the test messages and they went through in a few minutes (the inreach sends/receives messages every 20min) so some delay is normal. Gps signal seems to work well enough even indoors. . So far i've been able to pair the explorer with my iphone 5s and have gaiagps utilize the inreach explorer as it's gps signal instead of the built in gps on the iphone. That should save a lot of battery power on the phone while hiking. The delorme website is where you do almost all of the configuration of the inreach and then you have to install an app on your computer to sync those settings to the inreach over usb. A little hackish, but it seems to work. Would be nicer if you could sync the settings via bluetooth using the earthmate app. The inreach. Delorme. Com website where you manage all your settings (contacts, quick messages, etc) is just slow enough to be annoying, but not so bad that it's frustrating. Hopefully it doesn't get any worse. Honestly though, i'm pretty impressed with all the features- including the ability to setup sub accounts for your friends/family so you can lend them the inreach. That's a cool feature. . The earthmate app for ios is merely ok at best. Whomever wrote it really doesn't have a good idea how ios apps should behave. I definitely would recommend a dedicated gps or gps app like gaiagps for navigation. As many people have mentioned, the explorer has no base map and there is no means of uploading maps to it- instead you use the earthmate app for maps. A little weird having no maps but a digital compass. The earthmate app also is supposed to sync up settings with the delorme website and this seems to work 50% of the time or so. Definitely seems like they could spend a bit more time making earthmate better. I definitely wouldn't spend the $30 for a standalone earthmate subscription, but that seems to be included for free with the inreach subscription. I suspect i'll mostly use earthmate for messaging via the inreach and leave the maps/navigation to gaiagps. . Hardware wise, the screen is small, but isn't to hard to view in bright sunlight compared to other screens. The screen is recessed so hopefully it won't get too many scratches. The belt clip seems a bit cheap/flimsy and i'm not sure how long it will survive in the field. I'll probably need to come up with a simple chest strap mount solution for it. Also the dust cover for the usb port seems really flimsy. The plastic case is adequate, but not impressive. Would of been nicer if it had a rubberized case/exterior. Definitely wouldn't want to drop it onto concrete/etc. I'd kinda expect more for over $350. Other then that, the buttons seem decent and it should be easy to use while wearing gloves in cold weather which is a plus. The overall size isn't tiny, but it's not too big either- pretty amazing how small it is considering all the technology inside. Wish the batteries were replaceable in the field, but i'll probably carry a small li-ion battery pack to recharge it & my iphone. . There is a sticker on the back of the case with your imei number and instructions for turning on/off sos mode. The ink on this sticker literally rubs off with your fingers. I've never seen a professionally printed sticker have this problem before. There is a simple quick-start guide included in the box- not a lot of information, but there is a 30+ page manual on the delorme website which has more information. Sadly, the manual still doesn't cover all the settings/features on the device (like what is "extended tracking"? ) they could really use a good tech writer to do a better job. . Included in the box is a generic 1amp usb charger, a usb cable (from monoprice no less! ), a strap, quick start guide and the inreach.

Motorola MS350R 35-Mile Talkabout Waterproof 2-Way Radio Pair

Overall i like the design and the features but the first set is going back to online store due to a defect on one of the radios: the squelch does not close unless a "code" is programmed. The other radio works just fine. Just as an anecdote, i have owned a uniden set for 10 years and they are still working perfectly. . Features i like:. . - nimh pack but also accept aa batteries. - both tone and digital codes (my uniden set only has tones). - repeater option. - two power mode (but the 2 ptt buttons are a bit hard to locate and get used to). - ability to decode incoming tones. . Features i don't like:. . - opening the battery pack requires a coin (strangely enough, i don't go hiking with coins in my pockets). - poor quality (on a sample of one). - the weather radio has an alert function but it does not use the more sophisticated, per county, digital warning (same)

Motorola's talkabout ms350r 35 mile range, waterproof, two-way radio is by no means a fair weather radio. This high performance, ultra durable waterproof radio is right for the extreme outdoors. It uses both family radio service (frs) and general mobile radio service (gmrs) frequencies providing more channel combinations. With a range of up to 35 miles, 22 channels and ptt power boost feature, this radio is built for function, but also boasts a sleek contemporary look that holds its own with any trendsetter.

Motorola Ms350r 35-mile Talkabout Waterproof 2-way Radio Pair (Motorola Solutions) FAQ.

We've used these to communicate between kayaks and when travelling in separate cars. . The good: the range is great and communication is crisp and clear. Easy to use. The weather feature is good when you need it. We've dunked them in water and they do float somewhat (don't toss them in big waves), although remember to shake the water off, otherwise sounds will be muffled. . The bad: once we turn them on, the battery drains fast. Without much talk, the battery goes from fully charged to gone in 3 hours give or take. If that's all you need before recharging then these would serve you well. Otherwise take note. -Notice from P. Ophelia, Maryland

Just to give you some background, i have been an amateur radio enthusiast for about 3 decades now. I collect radios and i am a member of a disaster volunteer radio group. I have 2 base stations and dozens of professional and consumer radios of all brands spanning 3 decades. . Before i get to the radio review, i would first like to explain the advertised distances of any 2 way radio. In the packaging, it actually explains the estimated distances under optimal conditions where it is mountain to valley, medium in a lake, and short distance of 2 miles in the city. Using this radio, i can reach the nearest repeater to me which is 36. 8 miles away. They can hear me load and clear. In the city, my neighbor's son, to help with my testing, biked from our house and found a hill 2. 9 miles away and i was able to speak to him when he stood at a specific spot. . The testing i did below was the same test i conduct every time and always following the same path so that it is constant for an accurate comparison. It does not mean you will get the same distance as i got below. You may get less, or you may get more, it really depends on the environmental factors. You should be happy when you can reliably get more than 0. 5 miles in the city. . I cannot get more distance than these with any of my professional radios like kenwood, yaesu and icom. Unless of course i remove the antenna of those radios and mount an external antenna. I should know because i have an icom ht with me and i always use it to verify first before conducting each stage of the test. . Anyway, i really wanted to give you a very detailed comparison of these 2 radios, the motorola ms350r and the mt352r. These radios are about the same size and are both the new radios from motorola. So when i did my field test i was expecting the same performance out of both radios in terms of distance and clarity. . Here is my side by side comparison between them:. . 1. Menu features - they have very similar features. The difference is ms350r has the repeater channels in the menu and the mt352r has the dual channel monitor menu option. Otherwise almost identical. . 2. Repeater functionality - the ms350 has the repeater function. I was able to communicate with 2 distant repeaters and they were able to hear me. I had to speak up a little but otherwise they said i sounded great. . 3. Size - they are about the same size. The antenna of the ms350r is slightly longer though. . 4. Weather resistant - the mt352r says that it is weather resistant. It has an ip-54 rating. The "5" is the dust resistance and the "4" is the water resistance. This just says it can withstand a dusty or rainy environment. Ingress of dust is not entirely prevented, but it must not enter in sufficient quantity to interfere with the satisfactory operation of the equipment; complete protection against contact. Water splashing against the enclosure from any direction shall have no harmful effect. The ms350r has a higher water resistance than the mt352r because it has an ip-67 rating. . 5. Emergency features - they have identical emergency features. Emergency alert, flashlight and weather stations. . 6. Distance - see test below. . *range comparison: ms350 vs mt352r*. . Scenario: i had my daughter stand in the front of my house and she had an ms350 and a mt352r. I walked away from the house and would radio in every . 1 miles. I also had an ms350 and a mt352r. I would transmit first on the ms350 which she will only use her ms350 to receive and transmit. Then we would try to transmit with the mt352r. I live in an la neighborhood so there are many houses and trees. I believe this would be a typical scenario for most. We were also transmitting on a gmrs channel pressing the high power ptt button. I do have a gmrs license. . Test: 0. 1 mile. 1. Ms350 - crystal clear on send and receive on both ends. Louder than the mt352r. 2. Mt352r - crystal clear on send and receive on both ends. Clearer than the ms350r. . Test: 0. 2 miles. 1. Ms350 - crystal clear on send and receive on both ends. 2. Mt352r - crystal clear on send and receive on both ends. . Test: 0. 3 miles. 1. Ms350 - crystal clear on send and receive on both ends. 2. Mt352r - crystal clear on send and receive on both ends. . Test: 0. 4 miles. 1. Ms350 - crystal clear on send and receive on both ends. 2. Mt352r - crystal clear on send and receive on both ends. . Test: 0. 5 miles. 1. Ms350 - crystal clear on send and receive on both ends. 2. Mt352r - crystal clear on send and receive on both ends. . Test: 0. 6 miles. 1. Ms350 - there was a little noise in the background but it was still very clear on send and receive on both ends. The ms350 was coming in louder than the mt352r. 2. Ms350 - there was more noise in the background but we can still communicate. The ms350 was coming in louder than the mt352r. 2. Mt352r - there was more noise in the background but we can still communicate. . Test: 1. 2 miles. 1. Ms350r - her transmission was choppy. The transmission was very noisy. It was choppy on both sides. We both had to repeat ourselves several times in order to understand. I had to repeat myself fewer times with the ms350r. 2. Mt352r - her transmission was choppy. The transmission was very noisy. It was choppy on both sides. We both had to repeat ourselves several times in order to understand. . Comparative summary:. They are both the same size and the features are almost identical. The ms350r is louder than the mt352r but the mt352r is slightly clearer. I believe it has to do with the fact that the ms350r is sealed because it is supposedly waterproof. I like the fact that mt352r has the power switch on the volume knob on top of the radio. It is easier to turn on and off. It is really difficult to choose between the two since they are so similar. So if you need the repeater and waterproof features, then i would suggest the ms350r. . Next test: waterproof testing. . 1. I took off the battery of the ms350r and applied petroleum jelly to the seal on the battery case back and all the rubber seals. I usually do this on anything that has a gasket that i intend to immerse in water. I pushed the back down with my hand as i tightened the locking screw. . 2. I got a pail of water and dropped the ms350r into the bucket and left it there for exactly one minute. I took it out and wiped it dry, and used compressed air to be sure there is no water. I opened the case back and i did not find any water or dampness. I blew the back with compressed air and then re-inserted the battery after 30 minutes(of course i was scared that something might have gotten in). . 3. After 30 minutes, i turned on the radio and tested it. It powered on ok. Menus worked fine and i was able to send and receive without any problems. . What i did find that when i reinserted the battery is that if you do not push hard on the case back as you are tightening the locking screw, it will not have a watertight seal as i could see a very tiny gap on the side of the case back. That could cause water to seep in and damage the radio. I strongly recommend using some for of sealant or some petroleum jelly to make it water tight. I do that for my underwater flashlights as well. . Also, i noticed that if i use alkaline batteries instead of the battery pack, there is less outward pressure on the case back. The battery pack seems thicker than an energizer so it pushes outward on the case back more. So, if i ever go fishing or kayaking, i will use energizers just to be sure. . Well, i hope my testing and experiments has helped you. Please read my reviews of the mr350r and the mt352r as well since there have been lots of past cases throughout the years. Just like the mt352r, i highly recommend this radio. I will continue to update this review so that you will see the reliability of these radios. . I do hope you get into 2 way radios, whatever you decide to buy. These are emergency radios and they are a must have for any emergency kit or bug-out-bag. . *update april 1, 2015 - 3 years later*. My how time flies. I can't believe it has been 3 years since i bought these radios. They still look and work like new. I just replaced the rechargeable batteries with a fresh set. That is all i have had to do with these. I use it when i go to the beach or when we go boating. I also use them when the company i founded has need for extra radios for the camera crew when they cover events. If the coverage is several miles, we use the repeater functionality. . They are still great radios and they have been serving me well. Please let me know if there is anything you would like to know about these radios.

- N. WatsonI really like these radios and they have come in handy for hunting, car shows, hiking, just about anything where you may not be able to rely on a cell phone due to location. The scan function is great, especially when your trying to find a relatively quiet channel. The biggest thing that lead to choosing this radio is the fact that they are waterproof and if you remember the old motorola flip phones from the 90's, these are just as durable if not more. Definitely more durable than most of the competitively priced radios. I hadn't planned on getting a gmrs set, but since this is i went ahead and got an fcc id which is legally required in order to use the high power transmit. They also have weather/noaa channels, led flashlight, emergency broadcast, and with the rugged waterproof design they are a great addition to your bob, good pack, or other emergency supplies. . I only have one slightly negative comment: the battery packs that come standard are of absolutely no use. The battery pack is only 650 mah and if you use it a lot it will only last a couple hours. Most people are saying about 3hrs which is about what it was when new. I imagine that motorola chose to use a low rated battery to allow the unit to float. Alkaline batteries are certainly heavier and since its more difficult to make the radio lighter and still maintain durability, they most likely chose to downsize the battery. According to the manual the radio may not float when using alkaline batteries and i would expect the same result when using a higher capacity nimh battery so i will just buy a high capacity nimh and clip on a foam keychain.

They work pretty well but you have to make sure you press the tx button, wait a second, then speak. Otherwise your first few words get cutoff. This is common with these kinds of radios but if you're used to professional quality radios which transmit instantly it takes a little getting used to. These are a decent quality radio with ok range, definitely waterproof. I work i water resources and needed a waterproof radio. I 'tested' waterproofing on a couple of occasions and they still work!
