This little sat messenger is outstanding. . We were going sailing and i couldn't make up my mind on which phone to buy for the longest time. It came down to $1200 on a full iridium phone with voice, or this little guy. Couldn't be happier with my choice. This is small enough and light enough that i plan to take it on backpacking trips. If you just want emergency response and texting capability, get this; it's the iridium constellation for like $250, and its not junk. . Texting on the sat phone itself is tedious (but definitely doable); pairing it to a smart phone and using the app is the way to go (if able). You forget your using the sat phone, because it feels like you're just texting. The facebook post feature was cool. The built in gps is better than i thought. It gives you course, speed, etc; it updates every second or so. If you take a smart phone with you, download the maps for where you're going; then you can view your position and course on the app. Battery life is very good; we would keep it powered off and check in once or twice a day. At that rate, you can get like two weeks out of a charge. . Yeah, it performed flawlessly. And get the flotation case. . Only issue was being billed an extra month, because i cancelled an hour before the deadline (but still before); the delorme billing folks are amateurs. I took the issue to garmin itself and it was resolved. I'm very glad it did get resolved, because its such good hardware and i didn't want to hate it.

The inreach se operates over the iridium satellite network, providing truly global two-way satellite communications and high network reliability anywhere on earth, with no gaps, fringe or weak signal areas. With the ability to maintain satellite signal lock even in difficult gps environments, the inreach se also offers global sos capabilities, adjustable tracking intervals from 10 minutes to 4 hours, and remote real-time follow-me/find-me tracking and ping-me locating. In the event of an emergency, the interactive sos capability of inreach automatically triggers remote tracking and allows users to describe and update their situation so proper resources can be deployed. With 90% of the world s surface lacking mobile phone coverage, inreach se is essential gear for the traveller or outdoor adventurer to keep them connected and safe anywhere in the world. The inreach range of devices are the only affordable satellite communication devices that can both send and receive text messages.

See Delorme Ag-009871-201 Inreach Se (Gps Or Navigation System) FAQ.

I have used this for 20 months now, and have tracked over 4000 open ocean nautical miles with the inreach. I have the delorme inreach se and not the explorer. However, everything that i say here is applicable to the explorer as well. Important: when you buy this unit, recognize that you are also buying into a service program supplied by delorme, and it requires purchasing a plan. You can buy a 30 day plan, and let the unit then sit in your drawer indefinitely until you want to use it again. Or you can buy a yearly plan and pay a lower fee. See the screen shot and then do a search for delorme inreach plans and you can see your options. . Pro's 1) every 10 minute tracking for a low $34. 95 per month. See the screen shot of a recent trip of mine. I post this to facebook and people can go on the site and see me anytime live. 2) sos - want the helicopters to come? they will, but either pay for the insurance or pay the price when the rescue you. This does not take the place on my boats of an epirb, but it does make for a redundancy and you can communicate with the coast guard (email or text! ) 3) send texts to your loved one's phone. Its simple and fast. 4) send an email to anyone even the delorme ceo! 5) get the weather and get weather predictions for 24, 48 or 72 hours for a specific gps fix. Winds, temp, precip, direction etc. 6) use the bluetooth on the unit and easily connect to your tablet or computer for much easier input. 7) the unit is fairly weather resistant. Its not 100% waterproof, but i have been completely submerged in rogue waves on deck with the delorme on me, and it stays working. I also am in harsh environments at sea and it shows not corrosion of any metals like the mini sd charger port. None. I bought the floatation case for it, and its worth it. . Cons 1) it is both a communication tool and an emergency device. Delorme has on its site a way to put in information if someone comes and saves you like your insurance info, medicine, key contacts and telephone number, medical history. Important stuff yes? well, delorme did not protect this information and a hacker stole this information on march 15th of last year. Here is an excerpt - "the company said the hackers may have obtained inreach customers names, mailing addresses, email addresses, telephone numbers and, in some cases, dates of birth and information for emergency contacts. No other information, including financial information, was exposed, the company said, and the hack affected only inreach communicator accounts that were opened in the period from july 30, 2014, to march 5. " i wrote a note to the ceo of the company asking what they would do to protect their customers from this information but he choose to not respond. Delorme sent at the time that this hack occurred but did not provide any assistance. 2) the last screen shot is what is on my screen today. The network is down. This means that if you are relying on this system today, it will not work. You must inform the people that you are communicating with that if communication shows no activity, it does not mean an emergency. This is on the iridium network that delorme (garmin) pays for. If their system goes down, your service does as well. (you do not get a refund of lost time) 3) the interface to input text to the delorme directly is just like the one on netflix as you have to move around the screen to choose letters. I recommend using a bluetooth tablet or phone (andrioid or ios works) when you have a lot of work to do. . Overall i would recommend this unit. The plan is very flexible. Delorme is not too responsive however. -Notice from D. Harrison, Montana

This product is amazing! i bought this because i was preparing to go on a work trip to a very remote island in the aleutians (alaska). There is absolutely no cell phone coverage out there, and the only reliable means of communication is via satellite phone. . One of the most impressive things about this product was the battery life. I set it up to track my position every 10 minutes while i was in transit on a boat. It does require a full sky view, but i placed it in a clear pelican case and left it on the deck and had no problems at all. . Bluetooth to the hone is pretty strong. I could comfortably be 30 - 50 feet away and my phone never lost its connection. . I sent and received many text messages, with each one including my location, and a link to a map showing exactly where i was. Sometimes there was a slight delay when sending texts, but i assume that was just because the satellite was not directly overhead at the time. The longest delay in sending was about two minutes. . You can even update facebook and twitter from this device! you cant actually read your fb or twitter feeds, but you can update your status and include a lik to a map of your location! . . The monthly cost for unlimited texting is pretty reasonable considering its using satellite and not cellular. Being able to communicate from anywhere was a real treat! i also like the service plans delorme has available. Being able to do a month to month service as opposed to a yearly contract is a game changer! . . This is by far one of the best purchases i have made this year! for any serious outdoor enthusiast, or really anyone that just needs to be able to stay in contact while out in remote wilderness, this is what you have been waiting for!

- C. ConnieMy previous satellite locator failed (spot) while doing an update and rather then spend $30 plus shipping to get it repaired i decided to upgrade to delorme inreach. Wow, what a difference! two way texting is awesome and really gave us in the field and loved ones at home peace of mind. It worked flawlessly. Typing a custom text is a bit cumbersome but it isn't even an option with my previously unit unless you had a charged cell phone with you. While you can use a cell phone for text entry via bluetooth on the inreach, we were traveling ultralight and i left the cell at home. I received the unit two days before my hunt so i didn't have a lot of time to learn all of it's functions but i found it to be intuitive enough that it was easy to learn as i went. This was not so with my previous spot which i found to be confusing. Another thing i liked about the inreach is the battery life. It seemed to easily go for 3-4 days sending and receiving a couple checkin/progress of texts a day. Next time i'll have more pre made messages ready but that is all i need to do different. Also, the fact that you can suspend service when not using it will save hundreds of dollars.

What can i say - my life was saved by my explorer. I was paragliding in one of the most remote areas of idaho, the lost river range (location of idaho's tallest mountain, mt. Borah) when i ascended to an altitude of 11, 000ft with winds exceeding 35 mph, and despite my best efforts - including max speedbar, i had gotten blown over the top of king mountain - worst paragliding fear now realized. . Once on the leeward side, i experienced several rotor induced (full) collapses of my wing but somehow recovered from each and eventually landed out far, far away from the landing zone due to the strength of the prevailing wind - no one knew where i ended up. . The sun was setting when i finally touched down in no-mans land and no one knew where i had ended up as i was on the wrong side of a very tall mountain range. After an hour and a half of battling the conditions, i finally was on landing approach - flying backwards at this point due to the wind velocity but in spite of this i was not hurt on my landing. I ended up in the middle of a secluded tall sagebrush forest- unhurt and therefore did not want to send a generic evac sos for obvious reasons (to include a $10k expense for search and rescue helicopter) so i was glad i had a device that could communicate with the outside world in real time - my ability to do a two-way chat with my contacts not only automatically gave them specifics as to my exact location via a delorme map hyper link, but provided me great peace of mind as i didn't ever feel completely alone or hopeless as i was able to converse, albeit texting. . Unlike spot, with my delorme explorer, i was able to contact several people in my contact list and explain my situation and they were able to reply back accordingly and with updates as to my 'rescue' all via satellite as cell phone contact was non-existent. Having said that, my iphone was invaluable due to the delorme earthmate app i downloaded - no cell reception required, as the explorer and smart phone communicate via bluetooth. The smartphone earthmate app gets all it's pertinent info via the explorer bluetooth connection such as detailed maps and longitude/latitude and much more. This enabled me to see a map of exactly where i was at looking at my smart phone's bigger and color screen. . Just as important, the earthmate app (free download with delorme subscription, btw) enabled me to easily and quickly send lengthy text messages through the linked app which cannot be overstated. Though the explorer has the ability to create texts stand-alone, it takes quite a while if sending lengthy messages (scroll over - click, scroll down - click, scroll up - click, etc. Etc), so the messages are created on the smart phone, like a normal text, then sent to the explorer via bluetooth and then up to the satellites, pretty slick and very quick! my contacts got my messages within 20 seconds on average - about the same on the return message from them. Along with each text message, my contacts received a map link so they knew exactly where to find me. I was so lost that i had to build a fire knowing it would take someone a few hours or even all night to find me, but they finally did thanks to my explorer sending them real time map info - took a few hours they drove straight to my coordinates. . Bottom line, if i hadn't had my explorer with me (nearly left it in my truck), i can just about guarantee i may not have ever been found - at least not until it was too late as i had no water, unforgiving rocky terrain, no direct roads out and a healthy population of wolves and mountain lions in the area. Thanks delorme - i will always include you in my adventures from this point forward - cause you just never know when might be painted into an unforgiving corner.

Garmin Oregon 600 3-Inch Worldwide Handheld GPS

I came to this from the gps map60csx. I had first bought the gps map64csx but returned it because the screen wasnt any better than my 60. Also, while standing next to my bike (waypoint), on a starry night, it said i was 22 ft away from the mark. Not good enough for me. On this one, the screen is more vibrant and clear. This helps in looking at the birds eye imaging- which by the way is not free for the first year on this one for some reason. . It finds the satellites pretty quickly and in the same situation read single digits away from my mark and that is acceptable. The camera is nice though its not the same quality of a cellphone, which also geo marks your photos. Nonetheless, its a nice camera and serves a purpose. Its sleek, fast, the touchscreen acts like a cellphone of about 3 years ago and favorites can be added so you dont have to dig through the menu for your task. I would recommend this and i would buy it again if i needed. However, do your research on the birds eye imaging and make sure you are not under any false impressions. Its not like dialing up google earth. You have to preload the map for a certain, and limited, area before you set out on your journey. Im ok with this but others may not be ok with it.

See Garmin Oregon 600 3-inch Worldwide Handheld Gps (010-01066-00) FAQ.

I had an oregon 450 and the 600 is a huge improvement:. - much better screen. - faster scrolling. - batteries can charge via usb (finally). - touch screen input does not suck anymore. - it has a "go faster" mode that uses more batteries but scrolls maps more quickly (nice). . Downsides:. - garmin screwed up the usb plug location so that you cannot plug a cable while the belt clip is attached (argh! ). - battery life is still somewhat poor. I don't see why a gps cannot run 24h with the screen off (just recording data). My small usb dataloggers can run about 2 days on smaller batteries -Notice from N. Gloria, Northamptonshire

I am a big fan of garmin products - i have a couple of automotive gps units also. The oregon 650 has a ton of features and settings, including still camera and flashlight. You can also buy heartbeat, pedometer and temp sensors. It is infinitely customizable, you can lose yourself in the menus and submenus. It takes some time to learn to get the information you want out of it. It also communicates with my desktop pc, using free basecamp download. Screen is easy to see, even in bright daylight. My main criticism is the short battery life. A full charge of the included nimh battery pack barely lasts one day of intensive use, two days if you take it easy. If you take it on multi-day hikes, plan to have a solar charging system or bring a handful of lithium aas, they are lighter and last about twice as long.

- M. SusanaI ordered this gpsr after watching a couple of videos showing it being abused by being dropped, flipped and thrown onto a stone patio then , scratched with a key and tapped with a rock hammer. Amazingly no damage, none at all. I thought, this is the gpsr for me. I've had it for about two months now and i love it. Aside from the usual touch screen issues (the screen doesn't respond well to gloved fingers) it works perfectly. I use it primarily for geocaching and it does everything you need it to do: it's accurate, holds millions of caches (seriously, millions), and you can load it with free topo maps, and add custom kmz maps on top of them. A set of rechargeable aas last all day. It comes with a carabineer clip and you can easily add a lanyard. You can program shortcuts to jump to any screen you choose and it fits in your hand nice and isn't too heavy to carry about. This replaces my dakota 20 and is bigger and more rugged in every way. I've accidently knocked both of this off the kitchen counter: the screen on the dakota cracked right across is three places. The oregon 600actedlike it did in the video: it bounced and kept right on working. Got to love it. Ed

Love, love, love this gps! very easy to use, lots of great options, easy to set up exactly as you need it, lightweight and handy to have! battery life is a concern, though. I'm a wildlife biologist and use this gps to mark animal locations. After half a day of use, the batteries often call it quits. I'd like to just be able to use the rechargeable pack, but it's not possible to take a break midday to charge the unit. Instead, i need to be sure to have lots of extra batteries with me while in the field.
