Since we now have home aides caring for our senior mother we needed to monitor and record any activity within her home. After looking around the internet and at various retailers and service providers, we decided to go with canary all in one from online store. We have been using them for approximately 1 month. The units are very nicely packaged and set up was very easy. It took about 10 minutes to install both units. They have a very low profile and small footprint and most important . We did not need to do any contracting work hanging cameras and running cables. I thought the price was fair. We will purchase a third unit to expand the coverage area. . I am very happy with the performance of these units especially at this price point. The images are crystal clear and the lens covers a wide area. The zoom feature is great and i use it often. The infra red really works great. Although the temperature and air quality data is useful this was not an important feature for me. I can listen in on the conversation and the sound quality is fine. The siren feature and emergency call features are useful and i have used the siren a few times. . The app is very easy to navigate and i have not had any problems with it. . Customer service is top notch. I called in a few times and emailed them as well. The reps are very knowledgeable and helpful. Great follow up as well. They can remotely look at your units in real time and resolve any issues. . We decided not to purchase any of the plans they offer since they weren't practical for our application. But i thought the plans were very affordable. . A few things and the reason for 4 stars. What would really make these even better. A two way communication feature. These units do not work well with a dual band wireless router. The customer service reps told me about this in advance of my purchase. I tested the canary unit with a dual band and they did not perform well. I switched to a single band and they are working fine. The ideal set up is to hard wire these units since the wireless signal can sometimes fail. . Since these are first generation i expect them to improve and add features in the future. I think the company is doing a great job launching this product.

We have three canarys in the house to cover all areas. I gave the device a 4 instead of a 5 for three reasons. . 1. The power port on the back appears to not be as strong as it should be. Our satanic cat decided to knock one off it's high perch and when we found it, it was dangling from the power cord which had caught on something. From that day on the cable, which was fine, gave us trouble connecting and making proper contact in the port. We'd have ti jiggle it around, until finally it would not make contact at all. Ended up throwing it away and getting a replacement. . 2. I don't appreciate the fact that we are forced to pay for realistic storage on top of the cost of the device. 12 hours is not realistic. A week is realistic. . 3. Too many false positives, in spite of us tagging them all the time. Gets to the point where we just don't even bother checking anymore. We purchased two canary devices after we suffered a burglary on christmas eve. I chose this over the nestcam/dropcam system, because you get 24 hours of recording for free (with the other device, you have to pay to look back at anything). Our dog trips the sensors, as another reviewer mentioned, but we have adjusted the sensitivity of the device with good result. We will turn up the sensitivity again if we are ever away and the dog is staying somewhere else, as was the case christmas eve. This device does not let you "talk" through it, like dropcam/nestcam do (i. E. If you want to use it as a baby monitor), but i've experienced a friend's dropcam, and the voice is distorted enough that i'm not sure it matters much. Also, canary gives you a temperature/carbon monoxide alarm, which its competitor does not have. If needed, you can sound a siren through the device-it is pretty loud, so warn your spouse before you test it, ahem! setup was absolutely a breeze, and i like that it "knows" when i am home, so i don't have to arm it/disarm it. No complaints so far; we feel much more secure!

I'm giving it five stars because it does exactly what it says it's supposed to do in the product description. . This is a motion-activated video recording device, that also allows you to manually activate a siren if you receive an alert and witness nefarious activity in real time. It does not automatically sound when motion is detected (critical for me, as i have a cat), and it does not automatically call the police when motion is detected (critical for everyone, since the vast majority of police notifications from home security devices are false alarms). It doesn't claim to do these things, so i find reviews here that criticize it for not doing these things odd. I guess some people fail to read the entire product description before hitting one-click. . I bought the canary because i was moving from a suburban neighborhood (where you can leave your car unlocked in the driveway with keys in the ignition, no worries) back to "the city. " the likelihood of my apartment being burglarized is, i think, fairly slight. I'm on the second floor of a triple-decker, with locks and deadbolts on the exterior doors to the stairways and locks and deadbolts on my apartment doors, two downstairs neighbors who are home much of the day, and i'm directly across the street from a middle school where there's constant activity. But still, i wanted some peace of mind, and so far the canary is giving it to me. . The unit takes about five minutes to set up, link to your wifi and synch to the app on your mobile device. The first few days i was getting a lot of alerts triggered by my cat. Fortunately, there is a sensitivity slider on the app that allows you to alter the number of alerts you get based on the amount of motion detected, so i'm having fewer of these show up on my phone now. I've tested it by taking it out of privacy mode when i'm home, and walking into the living room from either the front parlor or the kitchen, and it alerts me in these conditions. I do still get an occasional false alarm from a window blind flapping in the breeze or some such, but it's not annoying at all. . One of the best features is the auto switching between modes. I leave the house, canary detects that my phone is out of range, and it flips to "away" mode. One less thing for me to think about as i am scrambling out the door, late as usual. . I see some people complain that you can't save a backlog of many days' worth of videos without paying for an upgraded plan from canary. I guess if you are using this thing to record birthday parties or naked romps on the couch or whatever you want to preserve for your own amusement, that might be a feature that you would need. The only video i would want to save would be the one of the guy ripping off my stuff, and the whole point is that i should be seeing that in real time if i'm keeping my phone with me at all times. So for me, the free subscription works out just fine. . I have had no issues with losing connectivity that i am aware of. It's been connected constantly for over a month without any loss of service as far as i can tell. . If i could ask for one feature, it would be a way to set up a dedicated alert tone just for the canary. It think the tone to alert you to a possible home invasion should be something different than the tone for an incoming text message. Something louder, more obnoxious. I don't know if that's something canary could upgrade through the android app, but it would be much appreciated. I'm willing to let text message and email alerts wait, but now i can't, because every time i hear them i think, "that could be a burglar! ". . But overall i am well pleased with this product.

Update 7/29/16 - the app has gotten better. The playback is much improved and the way motion events are sequenced has improved as well. I can say at this point that the canary is an excellent device for passive monitoring, this is, if you want to check in on things ad-hoc or look back at what happened earlier in the day/week. . As i've mentioned several times below it still is not effective as an active monitoring device, too many false alarms for a house with pets and windows. I took up matt's (from canary) recent offer in the manufacturer reply below and had a chat with him about some of my concerns. I learned that effective image recognition requires a tradeoff with security. Canary has chosen not to compromise at all with the latter meaning it is difficult for them to apply an effective 'learning' algorithm to the data available to them. I accept that trade-off, i would rather canary not have unencrypted video on their servers to process. Still - they initially marketed the product claiming that this would be possible. They still offer functionality in the app where you can "tag" events as pet movements, sunlight etc. To "help improve canary". This appears to just be a facade. . For me this becomes a 5 star product when i can turn on alerts and know that if i receive one it is time to stop whatever i am doing. It needs to have the capability to know, without a doubt, that a person is in my apartment. Perhaps pairing the canary with additional sensors (photoelectric beam, door sensor etc. ) could make it a more comprehensive and reliable system. . I was encouraged by my chat with matt, it sounds like they are focused on the right user issues and will continue to make this a better product. Upgrading to 4 stars. . Update 4/3/16 - there is still zero "learning" associated with this device. It will alert you for any motion like most other wifi cameras. The only "intelligence" they have added is a way to adjust the sensitivity. I guess this might help reduce some false alarms but it is impossible to find the sweet spot where it will always detect a person but not my dog or a moving shadow. And regardless, when there is lightning canary is convinced the whole room is moving and alerts even on the lowest sensitivity setting. . The app still is terrible. The playback on android is flawed and it won't let me fast forward in a clip. Occasionally i have had clips that are an hour long because there are lots of fast moving clouds (creating rapid light transitions) that create a sequence of motion events. It is impossible for me to jump to a point that i care about and i am forced to download the clip (which takes a really long time for an hour long clip) and then use my phones native player. Occasionally even with shorter clips that consist of two motion events it will refuse to ever transition to the play the second event. It is also a huge data hog. It easily chews through several hundred megabytes if you want to playback a couple clips (which you will always need to do to find a specific event since canary tags so many false movements). I can stream youtube for hours without seeing the same data impact. . My wife uses the iphone app. Same data issues and slightly more reliable playback. You can at least jump to a midpoint in the clip but she often runs to random playback errors as well. I can only hope that if there is ever an emergent situation where we need to review canary footage that the apps will actually work. Keep in mind the apps are the only way to review canary footage. There is no desktop/web client. . To summarize: they seem to be doing very little to improve their product - their only public release in the past 6 months paraded integration with wink and echo. I am sure those features makes their engineers feel warm and fuzzy inside but it does very little to improve their customer experience. See for yourself: . . . I was very excited to have a easy to use and attractive apartment monitoring device. Here are the issues i ran into. . 1. False alarms - pets: i get alerts all day from my dog walking back and forth. I tag all of them as "pet movements" so the canary can "learn" but the frequency of these alerts has not decreased. My dog just does the same walk back and forth so it is not like it is a different movement every time. Somehow canary hasn't been able to learn. . Update 9/30/15 - the manufacturer has acknowledged that at this point zero device learning is occurring. Their website says "canary's algorithm-based motion detection learns over time to send you smarter notifications. The longer you have it, the more effective it becomes". Right now that is a complete lie. Currently users are just providing data so canary can eventually develop a learning algorithm. I am all for being a beta tester when it is presented as such. I've attached a screenshot of what happens to my phone when my canary is armed on a day that my dog isn't even home. Each alert just shows the brightness shifting in the room. . 2. False alarms - switch between infrared and camera: the canary has a great nighttime infrared mode which automatically switches to regular camera mode when the room is light enough, and vice versa. Whenever this switch occurs it will trigger a motion alert. If your device is armed all day you can count on getting at least 2 false alarms. . Update 9/30/15 - this has mostly been fixed but i still get a couple alerts a week that consist of only an infrared mode shift. . 3. False alarms - sunlight: yesterday was a partly cloudy day so the sunlight was variable. My phone was getting alerts all day. . 4. Unreliable detection: after 10 days of false alarms i was excited to hear that my landlord needed to stop by my apartment while i was away. This was my chance to actually use my canary! well he stopped by, left a note on the counter, and left without my canary sending a single alert. After he texted me that he has left i checked my canary app and it was still armed and online. I got a dozen false alarms all day but no alert when someone was actually in my apartment. . 5. Unreliable device - as i am writing this review i am out of town and my canary app says "canary is offline". I know my internet is up because i can remote access into my home computer. Canary just randomly stopped working and there is nothing i can do about it until i am back home. This seems to be a frequent complaint in other reviews. It is tough to justify an investment in a security device that can just go dormant like this. . Update 9/30/15: several times since i got the canary it has disconnected and failed to reconnect. In these cases i have needed to restart the whole initial setup process to get it back online. . 6. Terrible app (android) - air monitoring: the canary has all these great features where it can monitor air quality, temperature, humidity etc. Well those features are completely useless because the app ui for it is broken. I emailed their support and they said they are aware of the issue and trying to fix it, but according to gplay reviews this has been an issue for a while. . Update 9/30/15 - the app keeps getting better. This specific issue has been fixed. . 7. Terrible app (android) - bugs: overall the app crashes frequently when i try to replay all of my false alarm clips and sometimes loading the live feed just never happens. . Update 9/30/15 - the app keeps getting better. The crashes occur much less frequently but the playback functionality is still extremely frustrating. . 8. No two-way audio - they seem to communicate this as a deliberate product decision to avoid associating any 'creepyness' with their device. It just seems like such a easy feature to add. When i go on the app and see my dog on the couch i would love to be able to yell at him. . Overall i am bummed out that this product didn't work for me. The device is great! the camera/audio quality is excellent, the night vision is crystal clear, and the hardware just looks super slick. Unfortunately the intelligence and apps that support the device are half-baked. I would not recommend this to anyone in its current state.
